A research project “Accelerated Urbanization in Luanda and Maputo: impact of the war and socio-economic changes (80’s and 90’s)”, in which I participated as a Post PhD researcher, was coordinated by Jochen Oppenheimer, conducted by ISEG/UTL’s Centre of African and Development Studies (CEsA) and financed by FCT. It has been developed in 1999-2002 and prolonged till 2004. In 2007, the synthesis report was edited and published by Colibri in a book, “Subúrbios de Luanda e Maputo”, which Isabel Raposo co-coordinated; she is the author of one chapter end the co-author of three chapters, the introduction and conclusion. She also participated in two specialty reports and in several papers. One of these reports, elaborated with Cristina Salvador, “Housing in Luanda and Maputo suburbs”, and finished in 2004 was considered relevant for publication. Several reasons led to delays in the edition of this book. This put the imperative to update some data, which was done between 2011 and 2015 in readings and visits to both cities, especially Maputo, as a condition for its publication, the objective of this project. The publication of this book include: writing a new chapter for the theorectical, historical and contextual frameworks of the research carried out at the turn of the millennium; the revision of the summary and the elimination of outdated material; the updating of statistical data; the revision and updating of the texts previously written and to keep; the selection and refining of the graphic material, photos, surveys, maps; the preparation of the layout graphic; the inclusion of recent articles by other researchers. With the finalization of the edition, a seminar will be organized to broaden the discussion of the theme. In addition to a new theoretical, historical and contextual chapter, the book is divided in two parts. The first part contains four chapters on the comparative research about the typology of housing, by city, neighbourhood and according to social groups, conducted, at the turn of the millennium, in the suburbs of Luanda and Maputo, with Cristina Salvador: the first chapter of this part concerns the metamorphosis of the peri-urban house; the second refers to the variations of the elements of the peri-urban house; the third approaches the elements of the peri-urban housing unit over time; and the fourth relates the housing types, with social categorization and trajectories of life, and concludes with a reflection on the precariousness and the peri-urban housing strategies. The second part includes six texts by other authors with more updated researches and visions.
