PHD | The collective construction of public space: Engagement and community participation in the process of transformation and appropriation of public space in Lisbon (2020-...)

Alexandre Vinicius
In light of the territory studies, the analysis of public policies, and social dynamics, this research examines the circumstances of the contemporary production of public space in Lisbon. Considering that the portuguese capital is integrated into a global economy and enmeshed in an international network of cities, its public spaces are materialized under the influence of an international economic system. Therefore, based on the contradictions of contemporary capitalism, public space in Lisbon reveals, and simultaneously represses, the interplay between tradition and multiculturalism, between sophistication and precarity, between the ordinary and the exceptional, between technocracy and participation.
